CHARLOTTE, N.C.- In this week’s Waiting Child we meet a young man who is ambitious, loves getting his adrenaline pumping and enjoys nature.
Derek loves football, baseball and soccer. He’s not a big fan of watching football on TV because he rather play the game outside, “I’m fun, active, I like to draw, skateboard, do anything that’s outdoors.”
He’s also a big fan of fishing on the lake. He prefers trout fishing because he says they’re always hungry, “You get your hands dirty with chicken livers and all kinds of different stuff, and I like cleaning the fish it’s kind of fun to be independent.”
Derek says he’s a pretty good swimmer too, “oh I love swimming. I can swim like a fish.”
He’s15 years old and about to get a work permit so he can get his first job. I recommended life guarding but he wasn’t a big fan of this idea, “I couldn’t be a lifeguard, I’ll be paying attention to other things. I would be like what, and then some kid may drown and then I’ll feel bad.”
Having a family is very important to Derek. He feels like he misses sometimes by not having a family of his own, “I guess being able to have family time. I never really had that.”
He wants to know what it feels like to have a family, “Something that nothing can change.”
You have the choice to change a life forever. Consider adoption. If you think Derek would be a good fit for your family contact The North Carolina Children’s Home Society.
