UPDATE: The Health Department says the students who became sick at a Union County school suffered from a gastrointestinal illness.
The Health Department says using soap and water after using the bathroom and before eating can help prevent the spread of such illnesses.
Children and staff who have vomiting, diarrhea and/or a fever should remain away from school until they are free from symptoms for 48 hours.
MATTHEWS, N.C. — The Health Department was called to a Union County school after around 100 students became sick.
Students at Antioch Elementary School began experiencing vomiting and stomach pain on Wednesday.
The cause of the outbreak is currently unknown.
The Health Department took samples at the school on Thursday. It will take about 48 hours for the tests to come back.
