BURKE COUNTY, NC–A man has been charged with human trafficking a child in Burke County.
Officers reported that Pasqual Mendez, 23, was arrested and charged with statutory rape, and transporting a child out of state in violation with custody order.
Police say they responded to a 911 call about a female child who had been assaulted. Upon further investigation, detectives determined the child was living with Mendez and was there to clean, cook and perform sexual acts on Mendez.
Investigators say the child had been in the states for approximately seven months and that Mendez allegedly exchanged money with a family member of the victim to transport the child from Guatemala to North Carolina.
Mendez is currently being held on a $1 million bond.
This investigation is ongoing and with the assistance of the Burke County Department of Social Services and the Burke County Child Advocacy Center the child is being cared for.
