UNCC Quarterback Released On Bond Following Rape, Assault Charges
UPDATE: UNCC Quarterback, Kevin Olsen, was released on bond shortly after 4pm.
WCCB was there as Olsen walked out with his father following his first court appearance this morning for rape and assault charges.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The University of North Carolina at Charlotte quarterback, 22-year-old Kevin Olsen, was arrested on Sunday for charges of rape and assault.
Olsen was given a $103,000 bond during his first court appearance Monday after being charged with three counts of rape, assault on a female, sex offense and cyberstalking charges.
Olsen is the younger brother of Carolina Panthers’ tight end, Greg Olsen.
During his first court appearance, prosecutors say Olsen and his 23-year-old girlfriend went out Saturday evening but went separate ways at some point during the evening. After separating, prosecutors say Olsen sent a text to the victim threatening to kill her.
Olsen and the victim allegedly met back up and took an Uber home, according to court reports. That’s when prosecutors say Olsen was upset about what happened earlier in the night and wrapped a phone charger around his neck threatening to kill himself. The victim reportedly talked him down.
The victim then allegedly told officers that Olsen came into the bedroom and wanted to have sex but she reportedly told him no. The victim then told officers Olsen forcibly raped her three times.
Olsen’s attorney denied the accusations during the court appearance. The victim was reportedly treated at a local hospital for having scratches and bruises. No other details have been released at this time.
UNC Charlotte released this statement Sunday:
“The University administration has been in close communication with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department regarding its arrest of student-athlete Kevin Olsen Sunday afternoon.
The allegations in this incident, which took place off campus, appear to involve sexual assault within an existing relationship. This incident occurred a week after a separate, unrelated case of alleged on-campus sexual assault involving acquaintances.
Olsen has been suspended from Charlotte Athletics, and the University is reviewing the case consistent with its disciplinary procedures.
Due to the ongoing CMPD investigation and federal protections on student information, the University will have no further comment on the investigation at this time.”
UNC Charlotte’s head football coach Brad Lambert also released his own statement Monday:
“We are aware of the situation with Kevin. In light of his arrest, we can let you know that Kevin has been suspended from all athletic activities. We aren’t able to comment further due to the current investigation.”
