Police Search for 2nd Young Suspect in Murder Case
MT. HOLLY, N.C. – Two suspects, one victim, all so young. 18-year-old Darvon Fletcher appeared in court Wednesday, for the murder of 14-year-old Taylor Smith. He stood before the judge quietly, handcuffed. He learned his case will go to a grand jury for consideration, before being led out of the courtroom.
Meantime, the search is on for 17-year-old Eric Combs. He’s also wanted for Taylor Smith’s murder. Mt. Holly Police are working with state and federal agencies to find him.
Chief Don Roper says Combs may have fled to another state, “possibly to the Dayton, Ohio area.”
It’s unclear what happened Monday at the River Street Park. Chief says the three young people all knew each other, but it’s not clear how. He says they all drove to the park together, from Charlotte. Roper says, “It’s obvious that they was some type of dispute that occurred at the park.”
So far, no motive. No weapons have been recovered. And Chief declined to say what evidence detectives seized from these northwest Charlotte homes, which are about seven minutes from the park where Taylor was found dead.
A GoFundMe account was set up in the teen girl’s name, to help pay for her funeral costs. Meantime, the search is on for Combs. Taylor’s mother, telling WCCB Wednesday, “Just find him and capture (all) that may be involved.”
Combs may be armed. Police want you to contact them if you know where he is. He could be driving a white over grey 2000 Ford Aerostar van with North Carolina tag EFT-1885. The van has only one hubcap, on the rear driver’s side wheel.
