Candlelight Vigil Held for Murdered East Charlotte Couple

CHARLOTTE, NC – Sunday night, family and friends gathered to remember a couple police say were killed by their own son.

A candlelight vigil for Curtis and Ruby Atkinson was held in Camp Greene Park.

Firefighters found them shot to death inside their home on Glencannon Drive, while responding to a fire there one week ago.

Sunday night, mourners lit candles, shared stories, then released balloons.

Curtis Atkinson Jr. and his girlfriend Nikkia Cooper are charged with their murders.

The two were arrested in Washington D.C. last week.

They’re also accused of kidnapping Atkinson Jr.’s 11-year-old niece Arieyana, who was found safe.
Her mother was in attendance at the vigil Sunday night and told WCCB Charlotte it’s been a difficult week.

“I mean it’s really tough cause I still haven’t seen my child. It’s been a week since this happened. I’ve just kinda been left out of the dark and everything, So I just want to see my child and spend time with her and let her know everything’s going to be OK, from and mother’s point of view,” Ashley Forney says.
