Albemarle Man Charged After Stealing Handgun, Running From Police

ALBEMARLE, NC — Police have arrested and charged a man they say threw a stolen handgun out of his car and then led officers on a chase Sunday afternoon.

Police say Cornelius Crowder, 38, of Albemarle, tried to avoid a license checkpoint at the intersection of N. First Street and Old Charlotte Road shortly after 3pm. Officers say they witnessed Crowder pull into a parking lot, throw a gun out of his window, and then he took off when they asked him to stop.

According to reports, increasingly dangerous conditions forced officers to stop their pursuit a short time later.

Detectives say an investigation of the gun showed that it was reported stolen in Richfield, NC and officials were able to identify Crowder as the suspect.

Crowder was arrested and charged with felony Possession of a Stolen Firearm, felony Possession of Firearm by Felon, and felony Fleeing to Elude Arrest with Motor Vehicle.
