NE CLT Neighbors Fighting Proposed Golf Entertainment Complex

CHARLOTTE, NC – Some neighbors in Northeast Charlotte are fighting a proposed development near I-85 and Mallard Creek Church Road.

It could bring a golf entertainment complex and hundreds of apartments next to their homes, along with restaurants and retail.

City Council is considering rezoning a 65-acre plot near the Claybrooke Subdivision.

Joe Payne his neighbors are worried about noise, bright lights, and traffic from a possible Top Golf location.

“We never believed this was going to stay woods forever. I mean it was beautiful when we moved in here. But we did check and see it was zoned for single family residences. So we expect single family residences to be built back there,” Payne says.

Linda Majchrzak says another concern is traffic and a plan to connect a current dead end street with busy Mallard Creek Church Road.

“They’ll be able to make a straight shot and they are going to drive very fast,” Majchrzak says.

Top Golf already has a facility in Southwest Charlotte that’s set to open in June.

A spokesperson told WCCB Charlotte Tuesday night, “We are exploring another location in Charlotte, but I don’t have anything specific I can comment on at this time.”

Neighbors have started an online petition and say they want city council members to visit before they make a decision.

“So they can see how close it’s going to be. And how it’s going to affect our neighborhood,” Majchrzak says.

Neighbors say they’re also worried because other Top Golf locations are open until midnight during the week and 2 a.m. on weekends.

“That type of facility belongs in an entertainment district part of town. And there are plenty of options here in Charlotte for this,” says neighbor Xavier Harrison.
