Stephen Curry To Play In Professional Golf Tournament

HAYWARD, C.A. — Stephen Curry is a world class basketball player and an avid golfer, who will be playing in an official Web.com Tour event in August.

Curry will play in the Ellie Mae Classic TPC Stonebrae, in Hayward California, which begins July 31st, 2017.

“We are elated to have Stephen Curry compete in this year’s Ellie Mae Classic at TPC Stonebrae,” said tournament director Trish Gregovich. “Our longstanding goal has been to create a meaningful community impact through this event, and allowing a true pillar of the Bay Area community and a genuine sports superstar inside the ropes to compete alongside future PGA TOUR stars helps to elevate that effort.”

A nearly scratch golfer, Curry was the best golfer on his high school team at Charlotte Christian, so it is not a stretch for him to play in a professional event.

He has played in various celebrity events and says he would be interested in a professional golf career after his basketball playing days are over.

A sponsors exemption allows the Charlotte native to compete and keep his amateur status, but some people feel the exemption should go to a professional golfer who needs the opportunity more than Curry.

Supporters of Curry’s inclusion point to the exposure his presence will bring to the sport, which has seen participation decline in recent years.

Either way, it will be interesting to see a great athlete compete in an arena outside of his normal realm, in an event that matters.
