Suspected Serial Robbery Suspect in Police Custody
MECKLENBURG COUNTY– A suspected serial robbery suspect – caught! He’s accused of hitting seven businesses in Charlotte over the past month. The suspect pulled guns on employees in six of those robberies.
The robbery spree started on November 15th in East Charlotte. It includes the Starbucks in Myers Park and the Subway at the Park Road Shopping Center.
CMPD arrested 35-year-old Luke Hawkinson while he was at work today. He’s charged with seven counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon. Many of the businesses he’s accused of robbing are in busy shopping areas, and customers we talked to are relieved police made an arrest.
WCCB spoke to a woman who says she was held at gunpoint while working at the Subway on Park Road almost two weeks ago.
“I went through this and overcome it and it’s a good thing that I’m still alive because it could’ve gone down another path,” says a 19-year-old victim who works at Subway.
One of seven robberies around Charlotte that detectives say were committed by Luke Hawkinson.
“He had the gun and he pointed it at me, and I was just pretty much in shock.”
CMPD says Hawkinson’s streak started over a month ago at China Fun on Albemarle Road.
South Charlotte resident Katie Hendrick says, “it’s defiantly is unsettling for sure. You know what would I do if I was in that situation, if it’s an armed robbery. Like yeah it’s defiantly worrisome.”
Another target: a Starbucks on providence road on November 28th. The area sees a lot of foot traffic. Lisa Tate comes here all the time, and she says she feels more at ease now that someone’s in custody.
“I think it’s a relief for all of us in the community because now we don’t have to worry that it’s going to happen again hopefully,” says Tate.
