Event Description

On Saturday, June 30, 2012, the Harvey B. Gantt Center will become home to the award-winning exhibition, America I AM: The African American Imprint. Conceived and presented by broadcaster Tavis Smiley, this exciting exhibit celebrates nearly 500 years of African American contributions to the United States and will bring Americans of all ages and backgrounds together to explore and appreciate our shared culture and history. The 10,000 square foot exhibit will fill the Gantt Center with more than 200 artifacts as diverse as the Doors of No Return which millions of Africans passed through as they boarded ships for the ‘New World’ to the typewriter Alex Haley used when he penned his Pulitzer Prize-winner, Roots, to Michael Jordan’s basketball jersey to the purple guitar Prince played during Super Bowl XLI! Charlotte is the eighth city of a 10-city tour and is the exhibition’s last stop in the Southeast Region. America I AM offers an in-depth look at the pivotal role African Americans have played and continue to play in the development of our nation.
