South African musical stage production, AFRICA UMOJA is coming to a stage near youReturn to event list.
The award-winning South African musical show, Africa UMOJA - The Spirit of Togetherness, has kicked off its first North American tour in New Orleans with resounding success.
"It is said that the harder you struggle the sweeter the reward. After waiting 3 weeks for visa's and having to call off 3 major cities of the tour and then have a hurricane delay the opening night in New Orleans was my worst experience ever with Umoja. Watching the audience reaction on the opening night and an even better on the second with both followed by a 5 minute standing ovation was the best and most rewarding experience I have ever had. New Orleans loves Umoja and I am confident that if this city which is considered by many as one of the music capitals of the world gives us the thumbs up we have something to look forward to for rest of the USA tour," says UMOJA producer, Joe Theron.
After having completed a successful tour in Korea, UMOJA returned to its homeland South Africa for a quick rejuvenating break before its departure to the US, however, the promoters were forced to postpone the shows in Los Angeles, San Diego and Dallas due to a delay in the cast's visa procedure. The International Arts Foundation, American sponsor of the Africa UMOJA USA 2013 tour will be working on extending the tour and hopefully re-scheduling shows in those original cities.
Traveling on the beats of drums, from the dusty streets of Soweto to all the corners of the world's best and biggest stages, Africa UMOJA tells the moving tale of indigenous South African music, its people and their song - from the earliest rhythms to the present sounds of kwaito. Over thirty countries have already embraced the traditional love songs, lullabies and other musical expressions of rural life. Marvel in the beautiful costumes and award winning internationally acclaimed choreography. Relive the energy of Sophiatown, infused with passionate voices as they tell their story. The heart is saddened by cold stories of forced removals yet the feet continue to stomp along with the explosions of gumboot dancing. There are also the reminiscent sounds of jazz that forced its way free from the constraints of the times and a thread of gospel music running through. It is a loud, colourful and jubilant celebration of life that audiences from all backgrounds have found infectiously delightful and uplifting.
