Man on the Edge - Food Stamps and Junk FoodThe Washington Post recently published an article addressing the idea that people on food stamps shouldn't be allowed to buy junk food items with them. As far as the law goes, the Agricultural Department says "soft drinks, candy, cookies" etc. are all "food", and hence eligible for purchase. But on the other hand, obesity is one of the biggest health issues in low-income populations. In fact, it's a bigger problem for low-icome people than it is for high-income people. And some say that taxpayers shouldn't be footing the bill that's contributing to the problem. So what do you think? Should people using food stamps be allowed to buy junk food with them? |
