Man on the Edge - Student Fees for Sex Changes
Duke University is upping student fees across the board by 0.3 percent. Not a lot, but Duke is pretty pricey, and has quite a large student population. And now all of them are paying, so that some of them can have a sex change. Duke will pay out up to $50,000 for the reassignment surgery.
To be technical, it's Duke's insurance company, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, that's paying out. And to be clear, it's part of the school's overall health insurance plan. But Duke had to approve the additional coverage, and it's not something most schools include. It's certainly not a health issue that you could easily argue is a life or death situation.
So should college fees be used to pay for any non-life-threatening surgeries?
