Man on the Edge: Gun Safety in School?It might be strange to think about a 5-year-old kid handling an H&K MP5 9 millimeter handgun, but that's how many, if not most, gun enthusiasts get their first exposure to guns: under their father or mother's watchful eye as they are taught how to handle the weapons properly. Of course, many parents don't want their kids to be exposed to guns at all, but these days, that may not be an option anymore. A Missouri state senator has introduced "Senate Bill 75", which would require schools to teach kids about guns. The bill mentions the NRA's Eddie Eagle Gunsafe Program", but any similar program could be used. The senator is talking about teaching kids in the first grade: 5 or 6 years old. They would learn gun safety and practice "shooter drills" in case someone comes to school with a gun. Teachers would also be required to not show any kind of "judgement" about guns in class. Of course, some might think it's the parents' responsibility to teach their kids about guns, and not the school's. And opponents to the bill are concerned that any gun exposure might encourage kids to gravitate toward an interest in guns. So what do you think? Should schools teach kids about guns?
