Man on the Edge: Should the Government Regulate Your Diet?

Tools

by FOX News Edge

A recent article from the New York Times opinion page says it's time for the government to step in and manage the American diet.  Writer Mark Bittman points out some serious health issues for Americans, and asserts that sodas kill more people than guns or cars, albeit in a less shocking way.

He also uses the "seat belt analogy" to bolster his position.  Back in the 90's, you weren't required to buckle up.  Then came the big push to make seat belts mandatory, and today, the National Transportation Safety Administration reports that the number of people saved by seat belts has increased every year since the laws went into effect.  So should diet be any different?  The federal government does have a stake in health care now...

Or is this the "slippery slope" of the anti-seat belt types come true?  Should the federal government be able to control what you eat?
