Spike In Car Break-Ins

CHARLOTTE, NC - It was supposed to be a routine shopping trip for South Charlotte resident Grace McEwen. However, she was in a hurry and decided to run into the store, leaving her purse in her car.  It's a mistake, police say, so many of us make all too often.

Grace says, she knows better, "You know how everybody is in a rush; and they're like, I'm only going to go in there for five minutes, what can happen?"  Police say it happens a lot.

Thieves have broken into 3,868 cars so far this year - that's more than 34 cars a day!

Officers tell us, even when people put their valuables away, they leave signs behind, such as, the mounting bracket for the GPS or power cords.
