Conn. subsidies seen spurring home solar powerHARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut officials hope to boost solar power in homes across the state with a subsidy for homeowners and solar businesses. Solar energy is seen as one way to push down costs in Connecticut, where federal energy officials say residential electricity costs were the third-highest in the United States in 2010. Connecticut ratepayers are subsidizing a state solar power program that has spent more than $2 million to install rooftop solar panels at 209 homes. It's led at least one solar energy company to set up shop in Connecticut to scout for business. It's bringing in another $4 million to finance installation or leasing solar panels. The goal is to generate up to 30 megawatts of residential solar power in 10 years, but backers believe that can be achieved sooner. |
