"Occupy" Coloring Book Hits the Internet

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - "A great stocking stuffer!" That's how the St. Louis-based company that's publishing the Occupy coloring book describes it.  The book, now only days old, depicts what publisher Wayne Bell calls "a lot" of varied opinions some, "fire breathing."       

It includes quotes from Rachel Maddow, Bill O'Reilly and more.  "As with all of our books, we don't really take a position, we try to represent what people tell us," says Bell.

The Occupy coloring book is meant for adults to share with kids.  It's the latest in a series of what Bell calls "cultural event books."  They cost $6.99, but the last one, depicting the events of 9-11, went for as much as $60 on eBay after selling out.

Bell says so far, Occupy has sold about a thousand copies in 48 hours.  He says, "We're very interested to see what the nation does think about it because we do represent a lot of opinions in the book itself."

We took the book to Occupy Charlotte, which has now grown to about 50 people, to get their thoughts.  One woman says, "I think the idea behind it is great."  "I think it has a pretty balanced message," says Statesville resident Eric Dow.  He has been camped outside Old City Hall for about a month now.  While he says the book is balanced, he also says it doesn't explain precisely why he and others are camping out.  "We're out here to end corporate influence on government," says Dow.

For Concord's Don Faix, the book - good or bad - is all American.  He says, "It allows people to talk, everyone is entitled to their opinion, the freedom of speech, the freedom to write whatever we want and thank goodness for that. Thank goodness for that."

The Occupy coloring book is available at places like BarnesandNoble.com and Amazon.com.  The company that makes it has also created coloring books that depict Obama's 2008 election and the Tea Party.
