CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Tattoo Projects is not an ink parlor.  It's an advertising agency in Uptown, known for taking risks and getting results.  It's goal: to leave a permanent mark with their creative work.

You've seen their stuff for companies like The Dale Earnhardt Foundation, Hoover Vacuums and Hungry Howies.  "The best way I've heard it put about Tattoo is we're like the Oceans 11 of advertising," says Creative Director and partner Buffy McCoy Kelly.

The company, founded in 2006, was just named "Small Agency of the Year" by a benchmark industry publication.  "Small" means 150 employees or fewer.  Tattoo Projects has a full time staff of 12.  Previous winners included agencies in New York, London, Chicago and Amsterdam.

"Being able to bring home the award to Charlotte will bring more attention to the creative community that is here," says McCoy Kelly.  She left a successful agency in Pennsylvania and cherry picked Charlotte for this business, even though, "Charlotte's not known for advertising," she says.

"Those awards show that we've got some great talent in this city that's comparable to any city in the world," says Janet Hart, the president of the Charlotte Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.  She says awards like this are tangible proof that a company does good work.  "It's a definitely coup for a small agency to win an award like this and it will help them in the long run," says Hart.

Many of Tattoos clients are in cities like LA, New York, Philly and Atlanta.  McCoy Kelly hopes more local businesses will decide to take advantage of Tattoo's talent, something she says will benefit the entire community.  She says, "When there's better advertising, when there's better work in the community, it raises awareness, it's engaging, it's entertaining, it's something we can all participate in."

The award was based on business performance, creative work, results and innovation.  McCoy Kelly says since Tattoo Projects won, she's received a flood of resumes.
