Drunk Driver Kills Dog Walker

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Police are investigating a Friday morning car accident that left one pedestrian dead and one driver charged with DWI.

University City Division officers responded to a call for service for a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in the 5000 block of Prosperity Church Road Friday morning.  The victim, Michael Dennis Case, 53, was crossing the road at the intersection of Loganville Drive, with his dog, when he was struck by a 1999 Volvo S80 traveling northwest. 

The driver of the Volvo, James B. Nash, 65, stopped and attempted to call 911.

Mr. Case was pronounced deceased by Medic at 3:58am from the injuries sustained in the collision.  Nash was not injured in the collision. Mr. Case’s dog was transported by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Animal Care and Control Bureau for treatment for a broken hind leg.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigations Unit were called to the scene to conduct the investigation. James Nash exhibited signs of impairment and was arrested on the scene and charged with Driving While Impaired. He was transported to the hospital where a blood sample was drawn for analysis. Nash was then transported to the Mecklenburg County Intake Center.

The family of Michael Case has been notified of his death.

The collision is under investigation and additional charges may be pending.  Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Major Crash Investigations Unit (704)432-2169.  Detective A.J. Oberer is leading the investigation.
