BESSEMER CITY, N.C. - 32-year-old Shanna Lanham is behind bars on charges including involuntary manslaughter and felony child abuse for the death of her two-year-old daughter, Addison.

Lanham is already on three years probation for a felony drug conviction in 2009.  Her family tells FOX Charlotte they blame Lanham for the little girl's death but they also blame the Department of Social Services.

They suspected the girl wasn't being fed properly or taken care of.  Leslie Reinard, a cousin, says she called DSS once.  Stacey Drewery, a cousin, says she called DSS two times.  And Linda Bryant, a cousin, says she called DSS three times.

Drewery says, "That DSS worker should be held accountable for her actions because she didn't go in there and she didn't thoroughly check out Addison, I'm sorry."

The family says they also alerted  Lanham's probation officer months ago that she was living with a convicted sex offender, Jason Wells.  Drewery says, "And the probation officer didn't do anything."

Wells is also behind bars on charges including involuntary manslaughter, felony child abuse and failing to register as a sex offender.  Family tells us he and Lanham have known each other since high school.  Both have lengthy arrest records.  Documents show her legal troubles started in 2006, his in 1998.

Lanham's family says she also has another child, a boy, who was taken from her at birth because the infant was born addicted to drugs.  Reinard says, "He got taken from her when she was younger, yea, he got taken from her."

Police say Lanham's daughter died last Thursday because she had a long, untreated MRSA infection which then infected her blood stream.  We've also been told the little girl had an untreated ear infection.  And police say she had a broken leg.

A woman who works at the motel where Lanham, the girl and Wells started living three months ago tells FOX Charlotte this: "When they first checked in, they were in room 122 and they said that the baby fell inside there in the bathtub and she hurt her leg one night and she never would take her to the doctor."

A memorial for Addison near the motel continues to grow.  The family hopes their personal tragedy brings public awareness to child endangerment.  They want to start a non profit and call it "MACE" (Mothers Against Child Endangerment), to make sure Addison's death wasn't in vain.

Family member and Bessemer City resident Linda Bryant says, "If you ever think that's going on, step up, do something, don't just turn your back and say it's not my problem."

We've got calls into DSS and the probation office.  The owner of Greene Funeral Service in Gastonia will provide his services free of charge.  Addison's body was taken there Wednesday but a funeral date has not yet been set.
