CHERRYVILLE, N.C.--The former police chief of Cherryville has been charged with embezzlement.

The small town in Gaston County has been the center of attention after several government officials were arrested on federal charges in the last year.

Investigators say 60-year-old Woodrow Burgess is pleading guilty to one count of embezzlement.

Officials say he used $11,000 of city funds to purchase weapons for his personal use.

The former finance director, Bonny Alexander, has already pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $400,000 in city funds.

Police also arrested several police officers and a sheriff's deputy on corruption charges in October of last year.
