Lincolnton, NC – A Lincoln County man was arrested Wednesday on counterfeit money charges after a woman called Lincoln County Communications to report that she was behind the vehicle of a man who had allegedly stolen money from her in Maiden.

A Sgt. spotted the vehicle around 6pm on North Aspen Street traveling south and turned on the vehicle.  He activated his blue lights and siren and the driver turned onto Industrial Park Road and came to a stop.  Sgt. Grinnell asked the man identified as Jovan Christopher Brooks, 29, to step from the vehicle and placed him in custody.

On the floorboard of the car the officer observed two large bundles of U S currency.
One bundle contained $2,539 in various denominations.  The second bundle contained $560 but as the officer was counting the money he discovered that $280 had a different texture, color and the same serial number.  The other $280 had a different serial number but all the bills had the same number.

The complainant identified as Chastity Adamo stopped behind the patrol car and told Sgt. Grinnell that she had filed a report with Maiden Police concerning the larceny of $3,350 in cash.  The Maiden detective working the case was called to the scene and advised Mr. Brooks of his Miranda Rights which he waived.  He admitted to taking the money from Ms Adamo and that he knew some of the money was counterfeit.  Brooks and Adamo were interviewed at the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Brooks was transported to the Magistrate’s Office where he was charged with felony forgery of a bank note and misdemeanor possession of less than ½ ounce of marijuana.  Brooks was released on a $5,000 secured bond.

Charges are pending by the Maiden Police Department on the alleged theft of the money which was seized as evidence.
