Matthews Officers Arrest Suspect in Friday Morning Chase
MATTHEWS, NC -- One suspect has been arrested by Matthews Police following a pursuit that occurred shortly after midnight. Mark Hardin, 21, of Charlotte, has been charged with careless and reckless driving and felony to elude arrest.
Last night two Matthews police officers, who were working a surveillance detail, approached a suspicious vehicle that was parked at the Kangaroo Express on E. John Street in Matthews. As officers approached the 2003 Mazda and identified themselves as police officers the driver of the vehicle sped off in a careless and reckless manner.
Officers pursued them in an unmarked vehicle with blue lights and siren activated. The suspect’s vehicle traveled south on Trade Street, to Fullwood Lane and then onto NC 51. During this time one of the two suspects in the vehicle threw a gun out of the car’s window. As officers attempted to make a turn onto Beverly Crest Drive the police vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. During the pursuit neither the suspects nor the police were traveling in excess of 65 mph.
Both officers were taken to Matthews Presbyterian Hospital and treated and released for minor injuries.
Early this morning the suspect was apprehended at his home, without further incident and the gun has been recovered. Police are still investigating the incident and the second suspect is still being sought.
