Police Investigate Officer Involved Shooting in West Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--Police are investigating an officer involved shooting that happened overnight in west Charlotte. 

Investigators say cops responded to a breaking and entering call off West Avenue where they found several people outside the residence. 

During the investigation one of the suspects ran from officers.  Police say that suspect, Christopher Fortson, shot at Officer Joshua Baswell. 

The officer returned fire and wounded Fortson.  Officer Baswell was not injured during the incident.  Police did recover a firearm from the scene.  Fortson was taken to a local hospital. 

Police have charged Fortson with assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit robbery, armed robbery and first degree burglary. 

Cops also arrested Ryan Sumpter, Ryan Munsey, Irving Lopez and Bridget Bowen.  They are all facing charges in reference to the attempted robbery. 

Officer Baswell has been place on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
