CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — A former Charlotte middle school teacher has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for raping his son's 15-year-old girlfriend.
The Charlotte Observer reports Saturday (http://bit.ly/pOUnK2 ) that 46-year-old Ernest Nichols pleaded guilty to one count of statutory rape; 18 other felony charges were dropped.
Nichols was a physical education teacher at Ranson Middle School. Prosecutors say the crimes occurred over eight months in 2008 and 2009 at Nichols' home in Huntersville.
Assistant District Attorney Kelly Miller says Nichols videotaped himself and the teen having sex. She says the tapes show it was not consensual. Huntersville police found the tapes along a highway.
Miller says the victim's family supported the plea to avoid a trial and the tapes being played. The victim is now 18.
Nichols apologized in court.
