Ex-NC legislator Lura Tally dead at age 90

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Colleagues and relatives of former North Carolina General Assembly member Lura Tally are recalling her as a caring person who worked on behalf of education and the environment.

Tally's son, Bob, said his mother died Tuesday at a Fayetteville nursing home at age 90 after years of declining health. A memorial service is planned for Thursday afternoon at a local Methodist church.

Tally served five terms in the state House and six terms in the Senate before retiring in 1994. Her family said she was instrumental in keeping the Cape Fear River watershed protected. Former Gov. Jim Hunt said Tally provided great leadership on education and early childhood development.

Tally was a Statesville native who grew up in Raleigh and graduated from what was then Peace College and Duke University.
