NC gov defends HHS chief after new hire withdraws

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory says his health secretary is performing well even as the agency's choice to run the state's pre-kindergarten program bowed out after it was disclosed she previously led a group opposed to organized pre-K.

McCrory told The Associated Press in an interview Tuesday he gives all of his Cabinet secretaries — including Health and Human Services Secretary Aldona Wos (vosh) — independence to pick their staff.

He wouldn't comment specifically on Wos picking Dianna Lightfoot as director of child development and early education. Lightfoot withdrew from the post last Thursday after facing scrutiny.

McCrory said his secretaries have a very good batting record getting qualified people hired in the month after his administration took office. He said Wos "is doing an outstanding job under tremendous pressures."
