RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Former North Carolina congressman and state Republican Party chief Bill Cobey is the new chairman of the State Board of Education.
Cobey was elected by fellow board members Wednesday — the same day he and five other appointees to the board by Gov. Pat McCrory were confirmed by the General Assembly in a joint legislative session.
Cobey served one term in Congress in the mid-1980s and was state health and environment secretary under then-Gov. Jim Martin. He was later state GOP chairman for four years and ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2004.
The board also elected Kernersville attorney Buddy Collins as its vice chairman.
