NC Graduation Rate Ranks Low, 46th in the Nation
CHARLOTTE, NC-CMS has more than 6,000 dropouts each year, that's out of 130,000 students. North Carolina ranks at the bottom with a graduation rate of 46th in the nation. Kathy Ridge with MeckEd says, "Part of it is the State is investing less and less each year into our public schools, we also have a real challenging economy in North Carolina." The Diplomas Count 2010 report looked at a 10 year period from 1997 to 2007, it found CMS has one of the highest dropout rates in the nation. Ridge says, "They do because they are one of the largest, because they have more students they are going to have more dropping out than smaller districts." The research also found 25 districts out of 11,000 nationwide make up 20% of dropouts and CMS is in that group. Board Chair Eric Davis says things are changing, the key is leadership. "The crux of the matter is effective teachers and effective principals, and we are making progress on both of those, that's one reason our test scores are up." The research does not take into account those who go back and get their GEDs. The method used to measure graduates uses the "No Child Left Behind" standards. |
