Butler Football Player Removed from School After Rape ChargesCHARLOTTE, N.C. - 17-year-old Osvaldo Sombo, “Ozzy” as his friends call him, is charged with two felony counts of second degree rape and a misdemeanor charge of sexual battery. The charges stem from an alleged incident that happened July 29th at a home in Charlotte, but the Butler High School football player wasn't arrested until August 11th. It is the responsibility of the court system to notify CMS if a student is charged with a crime. They do that via snail mail. That letter wasn't opened by a CMS official until the week of August 16th, five days after the arrest. CMS insiders tell us that even then, the information sat on someone's desk, which meant Sombo played in Butler's season opener on the 20th. School board member Kaye McGarry tells FOX Charlotte it's time for this procedure to change. She says, "I've been told they've been doing that for the last 6 or 7 years and that definitely needs to change and I think CMS is talking to the pre-trial folks to encourage them to fax a letter over to CMS because it really needs to be done more efficiently so that CMS can act a little bit quicker.” Sombo's last post on Facebook was five days ago. In the meantime, there has been an outpouring of support for him on the Internet. His friends have written things like "all girls are crazy, us guys just gotta be careful" or "be strong and justice will run it's course as this mess is settled." Sombo has a court appearance on Wednesday. He is free on a $103,000 dollar bond. He has been placed in the district's alternative school. That could change once this case plays itself out. |
