Butler Principal Theresa Hopkins Suspended With Pay, CMS Offers No ExplanationCHARLOTTE, N.C. - Theresa Hopkins, the principal at Butler High School, has been suspended while CMS conducts a "personnel investigation." The district says she's still getting paid her reported $112,000 salary. But the Connect Ed message that went out to parents seems like a decision has already been made. It reads, in part, "Theresa Hopkins will not be returning to Butler. We...wish her the best in the future." "I don't think that any of the parents at Butler would believe that Theresa Hopkins was anything but fair, even handed with her students and an excellent principal,” says Julie Parsons, a Butler parent. She, and many others we talked to, gave Hopkins a glowing review, calling her “phenomenal,” “fair,” and a “great administrator.” The news of her suspension has rocked the eastern side of the county, some even calling it an "atomic bomb." It's not the only recent controversy. Star Butler quarterback Christian LeMay was recently suspended for 30 days which will cause him to miss seven games this fall. He reportedly broke a "code of conduct rule." Sources have told FOX Charlotte that Hopkins may have tried to intervene with his suspension, which some have called unfair. Parsons can't speak to the QB controversy, but did say this about Hopkins: "Maybe she called the integrity of other people on the carpet and asked for fairness when fairness wasn't being given." Sources have also told FOX Charlotte that Hopkins was very vocal about the reassignment plan, which has shuffled students, including student athletes. Those sources point to the timing of this announcement, the same day high school football practice started, as a message that reassignments will be enforced. In the meantime, Will Leach will serve as interim principal at Butler when school starts August 25th. Leach has been principal at Alexander Graham Middle School for four years. We tried to ask CMS officials about the Principal's suspension. They're not commenting on anything, including any connection to the quarterback controversy or student reassignment. |
