CHARLOTTE, NC - As part of a district-wide reduction in force, notification letters are being sent this week to 1,077 teachers and support staff on the teacher pay scale. The letters included 338 notifications of reassignment.
Reasons for the recommendations of non-renewal included performance and licensure issues, as well as a lack of available positions. Included in the 1,077 were 285 teachers who had been hired on an end-of-year contract or other interim basis.
Employees on the teacher pay scale were required to receive notification by May 15. The teacher pay scale includes facilitators, media specialists and counselors. Laid-off employees will work through June 14.
These reductions in force are part of district-wide efforts to trim millions from the CMS budget. These efforts have also included central-office and central-support cuts and reorganization, school closings, a hiring freeze, changes in bell schedules and program cuts.
The district is still notifying non-teacher employees who are part of the reduction in force, said Chief Operating Officer Hugh Hattabaugh.
