CHARLOTTE, NC - Crime at school is up this year.
At Vance High School, 61 kids have been arrested at in the first six months of school, compared to just 8 last year.
Vance student, Nataria Lockhart says there are fights "everyday."
Last month, the violence came to a head when dozens of Charlotte-Mecklenburg police cars rushed to Vance after yet another serious fight. That's when, Nataria's mom, Connie Lockhart, knew her daughter wasn't exaggerating. "I think we just have some bad kids in the school."
However, long before police arrived, another Vance parent, Kimberly Parris, knew things were going down hill. "You see it every morning when you take your kids to school... kids hanging out when they shouldn't be." Parris says her son is so scared, "he stays to himself, he sits by himself."
So, we asked Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for their take. Official Hugh Hattabaugh says, "if students make decisions to make poor choices and do what they do, we all have to understand, they are responsible for their actions and there a consequences."
But, school officials also say, don't let the large number of arrests at Vance deceive you. They tell us, in at least two situations, a lot of kids were arrested for one crime. In one case, about a dozen students were charged for defacing one of the portable buildings.
That's still little peace of mind for parents like Lockhart. "I think the kids that are causing the trouble in the schools (should) be removed from the schools, forever,"
Now, Nataria wants out of Vance High. "(Kids) just come out of nowhere. You don't know whose going to come around and hit you."
For now, her mom says she'll have to stick it out, because there's no place else to send her. It's a helpless feeling for any parent.
Here are the numbers:
-Garinger High School also has a lot of arrests, 56 so far this year. That's up from 31 at the same time last year.
-Waddell High School jumped from 11 to 25.
But, it's not all bad news.
Officers arrested 53 kids at Independence High School, last year. So far, this year they've only arrested 22.
