School Employee Resigns After Slapping Handicap Student

HUNTERSVILLE, NC -- A teacher's assistant working at Bradley Middle School has resigned after slapping a handicap student in the face. Police say, Maureen Coello, 46, of Halton Park Drive in Charlotte, was arrested on Friday after a staff member witnessed her strike a student in the face.

According to reports, the incident took place Thursday afternoon around 2:15 p.m. in the school's cafeteria.

The staff member notified the school administration, which then contacted the School Resource Officer. During the investigation, Huntersville detectives developed probable cause to obtain an arrest warrant on Maureen Coello. She has been arrested and transported to Mecklenburg County Intake Center and charged with one count of Simple Assault on a Handicapped Person.

According to Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, Maureen Coello began as an Exceptional Children's Assistant at Bradley Middle School in June 2009.
