CHARLOTTE, NC - There's a surge in "bed bug" infestations in Charlotte.  Pest control specialists have seen it and they say the bugs don't discriminate.

Local pest control companies, like Killingsworth Environmental, say they've treated the bed bug problem all over Charlotte.

""They're in five star hotels and one star hotels. We've seen them in the higher-end homes in Charlotte and the lower-end properties in Charlotte," said a member of their K-9 Unit Andrew Rogers.

Michaeland LaKeisha Washington of northwest Charlotte noticed they had no idea they  had bed bugs in their home.

"If you look a the mattress, nothing. If you look under the mattress, nothing. It wasn't until my husband lifted up the box spring and saw a little bug here and a little bug there," said Washington.

The Washingtons were forced to call an expert for their infestation problem. Their home inspection included a dog with a unique talent.

"As soon as he picks up on the smell, he sits down. Then I ask him to show me and he shows me with his hose wherever he picks up the sent from," said Rogers.

Bed bugs are now more resistant to chemicals that traditionally treat infestations. As a result, companies are continually changing the make-up of their products.

The only real prevention is using a mattress cover or "in-casement."

"We've seen a large increase in chemicals, and we've seen a large increase in  mattress and box spring incasements, which is what you're looking at here," said Rob Smith, General Manager of Forshaw Inc.

The bed bug epidemic is expected to keep spreading.
