More Cases of West Nile VirusCHARLOTTE, N.C.--The West Nile virus is breaking records. There are now nearly 2,200 cases nationwide with 87 deaths. The Health Department says there has only been one reported case here in Mecklenburg county. The virus has been detected in 48 states. The outbreak is the worst in Texas. Health officials say the lone star state has at least a thousand reported cases and 40 deaths. West Nile is spread by infected mosquitoes. The pests have multiplied in the Carolinas because of our mild winter and all the rain we're having. Standing water is a breeding ground. Health officials say most people who are bitten do not get sick. Those who do have symptoms might have headache, high fever, and a stiff neck.
