Rivera hopes Gettis can fill No. 3 receiver role

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Panthers coach Ron Rivera says he views Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell as his starting receivers, but is anxious to see who steps up to claim the No. 3 spot.

Rivera hopes it will be David Gettis.

Gettis missed all of last season with a torn ACL after starting 15 games as a rookie in 2011. He's since returned to practice field and says he's "close" to 100 percent, although he plans to wear a brace on his left knee this year. The Panthers made great strides on offense a year ago and believe the speedy Gettis can really help their vertical passing attack.

Rivera says Gettis is "well on his way" to capturing the No. 3 receiver spot "as long as he continues to work and regain that confidence."
