Panthers Waiting for WR Smith's Foot to Heal

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Panthers' five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Steve Smith was held out of practice again Thursday with an infection in his left foot.

Smith wasn't present at practice as Carolina (No. 20 in the AP Pro32) worked with simulated crowd noise in preparation for Sunday night's preseason game at the New York Jets.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera says Smith is being treated with antibiotics and he'll wait until Friday to make a determination on whether or not Smith will play this week. Rivera says if there's any doubt at all about Smith's foot that he'll hold him out.

Rivera says he doesn't know — nor does he want to know — what caused the infection, saying "the least I know, the better off (I am)."
