MONROE, N.C. (AP) — Union County is suing the local school board to get access to financial records in a budget dispute.
The Charlotte Observer reported (http://bit.ly/19EyFHt) that county officials sued the school board Wednesday to force them to turn over records as the two governmental bodies dispute budget plans.
County officials say the documents are essential for mediation on the budget.
An attorney for the school board says the lawsuit is what he called "total nonsense."
School board members are unhappy with the amount of money that county officials have allocated for them in the coming budget year.
The school board voted last week to bring in a mediator to handle the budget dispute.
County commissioners say they would have to cut services or raise taxes to provide more money for schools.
