City and County Consolidation?

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The city of Charlotte and Mecklenburg county are looking at consolidating some very important services.

One idea being floated around is combining Medic and the Charlotte Fire department.

Mayor Anthony Foxx sent a memo with county commissioner Jennifer Roberts to look at consolidating those emergency services, human resources, permitting, and t-v production.

It's something CMS has discussed, as each group looks for ways to save money.

Several city and county workers told me it makes sense and should have been done a long time ago.

Mayor Foxx says the goal is to maintain service while cutting costs. "This is a period of time when businesses are reinventing the way they operate and I don't see why government shouldn't to the same."

He says he hopes to talk about this issue with council in May, but that might not happen until the end of the month.

City and county leaders will ask for your input as the idea moves forward.
