NC to Ease Food Stamp Income Requirements
by Lyra Manning

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Starting in July, more North Carolina residents will be eligible for food stamps. The state is changing income requirements, meaning some people who make too much money to qualify for the program now may be able to enroll in a few weeks.

Currently, to qualify for food stamps, a family of four must have an income under $28,665, which is (130% of the federal poverty level). After July 1st, a family of four can make up to $44,100 (200% of the federal poverty level) and qualify.

The state made the changes after seeing a dramatic increase in people seeking assistance.

The executive director of Loaves and Fishes says this will make a big difference in people’s lives. The food pantries at Loaves and Fishes have also seen a large increase in clients. “People can’t by food, pay the doctor bills. So, anything that lets more people access food stamps is going to help,” said Beverly Howard.
