A Deadly Year On Charlotte StreetsCHARLOTTE, NC- A deadly year for Charlotte pedestrians. So far this year at least 19 pedestrians have died on the city's streets. The latest is a 51 year-old man who died Saturday morning, after he was hit crossing Steele Creek Road in Southwest Charlotte Friday night. 40 percent of all fatal wrecks in the city involve pedestrians and that's enough for people to demand something be done about deadly streets. Drivers like Donald Troutman say jaywalking is dangerous and out-of-hand. "I have had some people just walk right in front of me just being impatient trying to get across the street. If I wasn't paying attention, I probably would have hit a couple people," said Troutman, a Southwest Charlotte resident. A few of the most dangerous streets in Charlotte, based on Charlotte Department of Transportation records are Beatties Ford Road, North Tryon Street and Central Avenue. Two weeks ago, a man was killed crossing South Tryon street. Police say he wasn't in a crosswalk or at the intersection and he wasn't the first person killed on South Tryon Street. In March, A 21 year-old college student was killed at the intersection of South Tryon and Crescent Springs Drive. "People are getting killed and run over, so they really need to do something about it. I think they need some blinking lights out here on South Tryon," said Chappelll Mosely, a Southwest Charlotte resident. "Crosswalks would probably help, but then again, people don't use crosswalks like their supposed to," said Troutman. Other drivers want a crackdown on speeders. "You better watch cars because you know how it is over here... crazy! Better watch the cars coming through here, they're flying through here,” said Steve Wright, a Southwest Charlotte resident. "We need a police officer out here in an un-marked car to see exactly what's going on," said Larry Byers, a Southwest Charlotte resident. According to reports, jaywalking, distracted drivers and nd lack of sidewalks contributed to most pedestrian accidents.
