CHARLOTTE,NC--Plans to create an airport authority to oversee Charlotte Douglas International are taking off.

A Senate panel endorsed a bill Wednesday sponsored by Mathews Senator Bob Rucho, it will now go to the Senate Finance Committee and if it passes it would go to the full Senate.

Mayor Anthony Foxx and other local leaders traveled to Raleigh to ask lawmakers to study the issue before acting.

The city owns the airport land and stands to lose a lot of money from fees the airport generates.

By taking away the oversight the aviation director would no longer answer to city council.
