CHARLOTTE, N.C.--The American Freedom Bell rang on Wednesday despite budget cuts that closed the Charlotte Museum of History.

It was coordinated by Charlotte East. If they hadn't organized the ringing, the bell would have been silent for the first Independence Day in more than a decade.

"Even if we just rang it today, we're building a tradition of remembering what is important about liberty and freedom, but also unity," said volunteer Elna Hanly.

The Belk Foundation donated the bell in 1999. It has run three times each year since. On January first, Meck Dec Day and on Independence Day.
