CHARLOTTE, N.C. - It wasn't that long ago that a new PC could run you a few thousand dollars, a big chunk of change for parents as their kid heads back to school. Today you can outfit your kids for a fraction of that, especially for those who take advantage of North Carolina's tax free shopping this weekend. "Most parents are looking at the 4 to 5 hundred dollar range." Jeri Chandler of Dat-A-Syst says others are opting to spend less and put new life into an old machine. "We get a lot of requests for upgrading memory, for upgrading hard drives, for speeding them up," says Chandler. Another low cost option for your college student is to purchase a refurbished computer. Places like Goodwill Computer Works sell an entire system including a printer for just a few hundred dollars. "I bought my color printer here. Everything that my daughter need for school, I bought here," says shopper Linda Johnson. New, used, or refurbished Chandler recommends any computer have a few things taken care of before they leave with your student. "They have to back it up and have virus and spyware protection." Don't expect that one year warranty to cover everything either. Dropping it or spilling a latte in it isn't covered. |
