CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- Several agencies are investigating an officer involved shooting that left one man dead, after police say he charged at officers with a box cutter.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, a man approached officers requesting assistance with his son, who he was having problems with.

Officers arrived to a home on Cooper Drive just before 11 p.m. Sunday where they found Spencer Rollins Mims III, 55, holding a box cutter to his throat.

When Mims refused to drop the weapon, Officer Michael Whitlock deployed his taser at the suspect, who started charging at the officers with the box cutter. Officer Jeremy Donaldson then shot Mims once.

Mims was brought to Carolinas Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead. Both officers are on administrative leave, which is standard protocol.

This incident is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
