Bus Drops Off Special Needs Student At Wrong StopCHARLOTTE, NC- A mother's fear turn to anger when she learned her four year-old son with special needs was left to wander- miles from home, alone. "As a mother, my heart dropped. I could feel my heart beating out of my chest," said Jessica Stephens, a Southwest Charlotte resident. Stephens thought her four year-old son Landry was brought to after-school care like every other school day. But instead, the CMS school bus dropped him off in the wrong neighborhood almost five miles away. Beatrice Maldonado found Landry wandering around near her home. He'd been walking for over 30 minutes. She took him door-to-door but no one knew him. "We said where does this kid belong and I said I don't know! I had to calm myself down. I found an owners tag that he had attached to his book bag and I called the number and thankfully his mom responded quickly," said Maldonado. "I'm just really grateful. Extremely grateful that she was there because my child could have been hit by a car in someone's house. Anything could have happened to him," said Stephens. Both moms say they hope CMS transportation works more closely with each school and each parent to make sure there's an organized system that holds each bus driver accountable, so that what happened Thursday, doesn't happen again. "I need them to make this a priority. It's a terrible feeling and I don't want any parent to have to experience this," said Stephens. CMS special needs students like Landry are required to have an adult escort them off the bus, but no one was there on Thursday. A CMS spokesperson says the bus driver has been disciplined and Landry's bus had a substitute driver Friday. |
