CHARLOTTE, NC- Forget getting paid to do your job - how about getting paid to lose weight?

"We want our associates to know that not only do we want them to be healthier, but we're willing to pay to help them get healthier," said Jason Sehorn, with Sonic Automotive.

Charlotte-based Sonic Automotive is teaming up with HealthyWage to offer a weight loss competition for employees. 36 teams of five compete for cash.

"There's a 10 thousand dollar cash prize for the team that loses the greatest percentage weight. A five thousand dollar prize for second place and a three thousand dollar cash prize for third place," said David Roddenberry, HealthyWag co-founder.

Over a dozen Charlotte companies have jumped on board. Sonic Autonmotive management says they took the plunge, and cover half the entry costs, because a body scan of associates showed it was time for change.

"76 percent of them were overweight based on the cdc's guidelines for overweight. Of that, 36 percent were obese," said Sehorn.

Soic owners say it's a win, win for the company and the employees.

"If they're healthier, health costs go down. If they're healthier, production goes up and there are less sick days. It's a better environment for people to work in," said Sehorn.

HealthyWage develops team based challenges, recipes and diet programs managed by a group of professionals.

"A staff that includes a medical doctor, a nutritionist, a psychotherapist and personal trainer. They provide a 12-week structured program," Roddenberry.

For teams - it's about the competitve edge.

"They work out together, they're watching each other throughout the day when they're at work. When some guy starts to binge on his bag of cheetos, they're like hey, hey , hey," said Sehorn.
All with money as their motivation.
